Colon Hydrotherapy

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colonic irrigation, colonics, colon therapy, and high enemas are all names for colon hydrotherapy using devices for inner cleansing. It is the gentle infusion of filtered, temperature-controlled water, into the colon by way of a sterile, disposable rectal tube or speculum. The water goes into the colon and waster matter is flushed out of the colon via the anus.

According to The International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy, "Colon hydrotherapy, is a safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine, without the use of drugs. By introducing filtered and temperature regulated water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis. This process is repeated a few times during a session."

The colon is also known as the large intestine. It is the last (5) five feet of the digestive tract. It is a hollow tube-like organ that frames the small intestine on (3) sides and extends from the ileocecal valve (end of the small intestine) to the anus. It is made up muscle to move digested food along by a wavelike motion known as peristaltic action. The colon houses a number of bacteria that produce vitamins, such as K and some B vitamins. Its major function is to absorb most of the remaining water from indigestible food residues. It also absorbs nutrients, proteins, and cell salts and returns them back into the bloodstream. The colon also stores indigestible food residues temporarily, and then eliminates them from the body as semisolid feces.

Back To Essentials, LLC uses an FDA regulated, open-system called a Libbe. Open systems were created for patient modesty and is used for constipation, before a Colonoscopy or endoscopic exam or when medically indicated. The open-system is a gravity-fed device which allows the colon and bladder to release as needed. The patient has the ability to push whenever the urge arises. The Libbe has an Odor Control System that removes any odor eliminating embarrassment. It also has a (2) two inch diameter, (3) foot long viewing tube so the therapist and patient can see everything being eliminated.

What Is The Process?

The patient is lying supine, straddling the device with the knees bent. There is a basin underneath the patient’s bottom synonymous to a built in toilet. A sterile, disposable rectal tube, with the diameter of a pencil, is inserted about an inch into the anus. The patient is completely draped at all times. Warm filtered water trickles into the colon via the anus. Once the colon begins to fill, the patient gets the urge to have a bowel movement. When the patient releases, the feces goes down the drain, through the viewing tube, and out into the sewage. This process is repeated several times throughout a (30) thirty minute session. After the session, the patient is given “after-care” instructions.
